MartinLogan heeft de elektrostatische transducentechnologie niet uitgevonden. Maar door het elimineren van de waargenomen tekortkomingen van elektrostatische technologie, zoals slechte stroomafhandeling, gebrek aan basrespons en smalle soundstage (beaming), heeft MartinLogan het voordeel van elektrostatische technologie versterkt: griezelige audio-nauwkeurigheid.
Een elektrostatische transducer heeft drie componenten - stators, een diafragma en rondhouten (niet-geleidende afstandhouders die de lange assemblage stationair houden) - geassembleerd als sandwich. Het diafragma is een ultralichte film geïmpregneerd met een elektrisch geleidend materiaal en strak gespannen tussen twee stators, die geperforeerde staalplaten zijn die zijn gecoat met een isolator.
Wanneer de luidspreker werkt, wordt het membraan geladen met een elektrostatisch veld met een vaste positieve spanning. De twee stators, waartussen het diafragma wordt uitgerekt, worden geladen met spanningen van gelijke sterkte maar tegengestelde polariteit. Deze ladingen vinden plaats in onmiddellijk afwisselende pulsen volgens het signaal ontvangen van uw audioapparatuur. Wanneer de lading op de ene stator positief is, is de lading op de andere negatief. Omdat soortgelijke ladingen afstoten en tegengestelde ladingen aantrekken, zal de constant positieve lading van het membraan het naar voren of naar achteren dwingen, afhankelijk van de statorladingen. Met deze beweging vertaalt een elektrostatische transducer een elektrisch audiosignaal in de diafragma-beweging die geluidsgolven in uw kamer produceert.
Omdat traditionele conusluidsprekers geluid produceren in reactie op de afzonderlijke bewegingen van veel kleine onderdelen (spreekspoel, vormapparaat, diafragma), kunnen ze niet anders dan een vertraging veroorzaken die leidt tot vervorming als het signaal door deze delen en over de conus reist. Maar een elektrostatische transducer heeft slechts één bewegend deel: het diafragma. De beweging is onmiddellijk, zonder vertraging, waardoor het diafragma zelfs de meest delicate sonische details met absolute precisie kan traceren. Het oppervlak van het diafragma is veel groter dan elke conusaandrijver, waardoor de elektrostatische transducer over een uitzonderlijk breed frequentiebereik kan presteren zonder naar een andere driver te hoeven oversteken.
De ingenieurs van MartinLogan hebben deze elektrostatische basistechnologieën verbeterd met hun unieke innovaties.
De componenten van elk MartinLogan elektrostatisch paneel worden in ons eigen vacuümverlijmingsproces gesmolten met behulp van een ruimtevaartlijm waarvan de houdsterkte groter is dan die van lassen. Vacuümverlijming zorgt voor een uniforme membraanspanning en vergemakkelijkt de extreem nauwe toleranties die nodig zijn voor de constructie van een dergelijke nauwkeurige transducer.
De stators die het diafragma "sandwichen" moeten stijf genoeg zijn om absoluut stationair te blijven ondanks de sterke elektrostatische krachten die ze tijdens gebruik duwen en trekken. Ze moeten ook worden geperforeerd om geluid door te laten. Het MicroPerf-ontwerp van MartinLogan optimaliseert deze afweging door de grootte van de afzonderlijke statorgaten te verkleinen, waardoor het effectieve stralingsoppervlak van het membraan wordt vergroot zonder de structurele integriteit van het paneel in gevaar te brengen. De ClearSpar-afstandsstukken van MartinLogan versterken de assemblage over de gehele breedte en zorgen voor de consistente spanning van het vacuüm gebonden membraan tussen de statoren met absoluut geen visuele of auditieve obstructies.

Het maakt het dipoolstralingspatroon vrij om een royale hoeveelheid sfeerverrijkende laat binnenkomende reflecties van de muur achter uw luidsprekers te produceren. Tegelijkertijd behouden elektrostatische panelen een relatief beperkte verticale spreiding, waardoor ongewenste reflecties van vloer en plafond worden geminimaliseerd.
